I was having a very similar problem -- link also said "Warning: Attempt to Read Proprietary" and all the article titles were very long text that appeared to be part of an error message.
System > Install > Language and reinstalling the language pack worked for me. Though I did also have to copy language/en-US/com_contact.ini onto /language/en-US/en-US.com_contact.ini for emails to start behaving correctly too.
